What a biostatistician says about ECG+

One of our long-term users spent the first 15 years of his career as an R&D biostatistician, and more than 20 years after that as an IT executive in large international life-science companies. He is not a cardiologist or electrophysiologist, just a patient with relatively minor atrial arrhythmias who wanted to understand what his own data could tell him. He has used ECG+ for several years to track his premature-beat burden over time and bring that longitudinal picture to his cardiologist. Why trends matter more than single recordings

His starting point is a problem that anyone living with an arrhythmia will recognize: the things that move the needle, symptoms, medications, procedures, and lifestyle changes, often take weeks or months to show their effect. A single ECG is a snapshot. What he wanted was the shape of the curve.

Over several years he has used that record to track the changes associated with medication adjustments, electrophysiology evaluations, and his exercise patterns. The biostatistician's instinct shows in how he reads it, separating signal from noise:

That distinction matters most around medication. When a dose changes, the question is whether the premature beats genuinely settled or just happened to be quiet that week. A trend line across many recordings answers that far better than any single reading, and it gives his cardiologist concrete numbers to weigh when deciding whether to adjust the dose. What it is, and what it is not

He is careful about the limits, and we think his framing belongs here alongside the praise:

  • It does not diagnose. In his words, ECG+ "does not diagnose disease, replace medical judgment, or provide definitive answers."
  • It helps you ask better questions. What it can do is "help informed patients ask better questions and participate more effectively in conversations with their healthcare team."
  • It is not a research instrument. "ECG+ will not turn an Apple Watch into a medical research device." Its value, he notes, depends entirely on how it is used.
  • It is most useful for tracking over time. For patients interested in following their cardiac data, he found it provides "capabilities that I have found genuinely useful and difficult to obtain elsewhere."

That is the spirit in which ECG+ is meant to be used: not to self-diagnose or replace a clinician, but to give technically minded patients an organized record they can review systematically and discuss with their physicians.
